CONTAINED

Contained - Day by Day Size 160"x16" While COVID-19 is running rampant out there, I am contained inside my home. Waking up, expecting nothing new, each day a repetition of the day before. My world has been diminished to what I can do within these walls and to what I can see outside my windows. As my world has shrunk, minutia has become relevant. A car driving by, a person walking. A yellow car, a person walking a dog. The promise of delivery vehicles, the dread of a fire truck. The hope for sunny days while in reality the fog setting in. In California a state wide “Safer at Home” public order took effect March 19th calling on us all, except for essential workers, to isolate in our homes. The closedown initially worked slowing the spread of COVID-19 in California. But by the end of May, after a gradual reopening, Memorial Day weekend and Black Lives Matter protests, COVID-19 cases were increasing again. Without a clear end in sight I stopped tracking on May 30th. “Contained - Day by Day” is a daily grid from March 19th – May 30th of the view through my window. Photographed during the “Safer at Home” period the grid is laid out to reflect the long drawn-out process of initial optimism, pending dread, rise in California COVID-19 deaths, confusion and uncertainty that still remain as COVID-19 continues to run rampant affecting more and more people. The grid ends with darkness realizing that our COVID-19 cannot be counted in days, or months.

I’ve realized that most of the action I see outside my windows is happening in the sky. Looking to the sky hoping for sunny days with clouds floating by while in reality the fog is setting in.
