CLIMATE CHANGE: EFFECT - Melting Antarctica
Antarctica is warming as a whole because of climate change but the Antarctica Peninsula is among the fastest warming regions of the planet. 87% of glaciers along the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula have retreated in the last 50 years with most of the glaciers showing an accelerated retreat in the last 12 years. The Antarctic Circumpolar Current has also warmed more rapidly that the global ocean as a whole. This current connects the worlds three major oceans (Atlantic, Pacific and Indian) impacting regional weather patterns along the way.
